Great Northern Highway - Baskerville

The Swan River at Baskerville was the landing site for Captain James Stirling and his group as he explored the Swan River in 1827 (named for the Black Swans that were plentiful upon it). Sadly there are none in the upper reaches of the Swan river any more, due to introduced foxes and hunting. In 1829 Captain Stirling returned to form the colony with British settlers. As progress was made the colonists found the rich fertile soils in the Swan Valley. In 1922 the Baskerville area between the Swan river and Great Northern Highway was subdivided for viticulture.
